Ep 4.01 - Jan 10, 2015: Winter Night Clarity

Image
There's no better way to focus your mind than to breathe cold, fresh air (the kind left in the studio by open-all-the-windows-Drew, host of the Revolutions Per Minute show that precedes the Groove). This evening's set seems to reflect that singular purpose of exploring crystalline spaces of word, sound and groove, from the indie electro-pop first set through a techno workout in the latter half. Suck in a fresh breath of night air, warm up the subwoofers, and enjoy. Episode 216: Disconnecting Flight

Image
Somehow this evening, the trays never went back to the upright position and cruising altitude was often exceeded. The champagne flowed freely, even in coach. Everyone's luggage was sent home but the passengers were diverted to a tropical island where the wild plants were all medicinal. The autopilot busted the crossfader while the captain burned the No Smoking sign in the bonfire. We know you have a choice of radio shows, so thank you for flying Eccentric Groove. Episode 214: State of Changefulness

A good night for reflecting on change, transition, and the dangers of resting on one's laurels. In the least abstract discussion of the concept, my DJ software changed on me and all the functions are completely different - so I needed to temper my annoyance at having my cheese moved, and get on the change train. I celebrated minor victories during the show, such as finding the button to play music in stereo instead of mono. This is coupled with the fact of transitioning away from being exclusively a vinyl DJ and becoming a hybrid digital DJ, due to the realities of music distribution. I'll tell you one thing, though: I've never turned on a turntable and discovered someone had moved the knobs and switches around. Episode 212: Melted Wax - June 29, 2013

Image
photo credit: ferusanimus@flickr Fresh from attending the lovely Closer PDX electronic music festival in Portland followed by a week of temperate rain forest relaxation, I arrived back in Chico's mind-melting inferno today to put together this show. Concerned for my trove of heat-sensitive vinyl, I played almost all wax tonight, in case they should melt in my car on the way home from the show.  Special shout out to my many gay married (and unmarried) friends - this weekend belongs to you, and the track I played by San Francisco's beloved 80's synth-disco wunderkind Patrick Cowley is dedicated to your/our victory. Eccentric Groove with guest DJ No - December 29, 2012

With my studio guest and longtime friend DJ No, we dug deep into the funk and breakbeats this week. DJ No resides from the SF Bay Area but picked up the DJ habit in Florida's fertile funky breaks scene of the 90s. We were fortunate to have DJ No spin for us on New Year's Eve this year, and he previewed a few of those tracks for us on the radio show. It was a dark and stormy night... seriously, it was the evening of the "atmospheric river" blasting 10 inches of rain into northern California, sheets of rain clattering against the KZFR studio windows, and with just hours to spare before the FM transmitter took a direct hit, I managed to put together this show for you. Eccentric Groove with guest DJ Oilpanic Nov. 17, 2012

Image
It was my pleasure this week to have Chico's own DJ/producer Oilpanic in the studio to mix up some of his favorite current sounds. Hjalmar Hake aka Oilpanic hails originally from Sweden but has called Chico his home for many years. He's recently released techno tracks and EPs to critical acclaim on the local 530Techno label as well as Blipswitch, Musical Missionaries and Waveform, and has been nominated numerous times for best electronic artist in Chico. Oilpanic brought in his Traktor rig and I let him take over the show for this rare treat. Hope you enjoy the podcast. Eccentric Groove first show! Sept. 22, 2012

A new show, on a new night...  I'm happy to introduce a new radio show tonight, playing some serious Saturday night vibes! While I'll miss the late Sundays of the After After Party, it was hard to be convincingly chipper at work 6 hours later. I'll be hosting " Eccentric Groove"  on alternating Saturday nights 10pm to midnight, and hopefully the energy I and my guests will bring is the weekend soundtrack you'll be looking forward to. And of course, the podcasting will continue. As a nod to my live listeners and in the interest of using Soundcloud more efficiently, I'll podcast just one hour of every show. Let the wild rumpus start! Playlist Part 1  Death In Vegas "Candie McKenzie" on Fuel 2000  Lianne La Havas "Forget (Laurel Halo mix)"  A Number Of Names "Shari Vari (ADULT. After After Party August 12, 2012

On the heels of a week that brought us unbelievable triumphs of humanity - shattered records at the London Olympic games and high-res photos of a new landscape on Mars, I felt this week the impetus to explore the territory of our hot human hearts and our cold analytic brains. So this show balances the funk of modern disco with the efficient and clinical pounding of techno, crossing that liquid ocean of improvised electronic music in the middle. Enjoy! What makes for an emotional night for techno nerds like me? NASA landing an SUV-sized mobile laboratory on Mars. Gives me chills just thinking about it, and of course I watched it live on NASA TV right before coming down to the station. Thanks to our fine 100-year-old telephone company, our home was thrust into a deep cavern of No Internet this week... and as a result I did a bit of deeper crate digging to pull some gems for this show while working on a few new projects in the music studio. After After Party July 22, 2012

Such a fierce, hot day - 107 during the day, 95 degrees when I left for the radio studio. Was just a tiny bit concerned about the vinyl surviving the trip, but it'll take more than a minor July inferno to keep me from bringing real analog goodness to the airwaves. With dips into psyched-out disco edit territory, a little hip-hop, synthesizer experiments, some deep techno and edgy bass-heavy electro tunes, there's something for everything in this podcast. May 20, 2012 with guest Sean-Michael Yoder

Image
Annular Eclipse of the Sean This show was an example of where I see community radio as different from a regular music podcast - not just content but context! Electronic music journalist and PR professional Sean Yoder graciously dropped by to talk about electronic dance music landscape as he sees it from the business perspective - how artists are getting their music out, and how listeners are taking it in. We paid our tribute to those who left us this week, and played some as-yet-unreleased tracks from Sean's artists, including some really innovative techno corkers. I hope you'll enjoy the conversation and the tunes as much as we enjoyed doing it. Feedback always welcome through comments or on the Facebook page .
