I'd planned to play some of my favorite records on the eve of my birthday, but ended up waiting a week. I think during that week, the records sitting in my flight case matured like a fine wine, setting up a complex bouquet of funk, electronic glitches, politics and pleasure. Crate conditioned, this set was fun to play and a reminder that if I could have just one technology on a desert island, it'd be two turntables and a mixer. A good night for reflecting on change, transition, and the dangers of resting on one's laurels. In the least abstract discussion of the concept, my DJ software changed on me and all the functions are completely different - so I needed to temper my annoyance at having my cheese moved, and get on the change train. I celebrated minor victories during the show, such as finding the button to play music in stereo instead of mono. This is coupled with the fact of transitioning away from being exclusively a vinyl DJ and becoming a hybrid digital DJ, due to the realities of music distribution. I'll tell you one thing, though: I've never turned on a turntable and discovered someone had moved the knobs and switches around. Such a fierce, hot day - 107 during the day, 95 degrees when I left for the radio studio. It's sweltering out there. Still, at 11pm at night. At midnight. Chico's melting after a weekend of the triple digits. Sweaty times require sweaty funky music, my friends, and that's what filled my crate several days ago when I did a little extracurricular KZFR set on Wednesday night. So carrying that over to this evening, we find this set starting out with a hot blast of funk, settling into a deep dancefloor groove, and soon moving beyond into uncharted territories. Soon, we've forgotten the radiating pavement and swamp cooler buzz, as the ethereal vibes of some deep sea techno envelope us. This is how I cool off, and it's late now, time to open windows and drift to sleep on the breeze.
